Dr. Harvey L. R. Wiebe (BA'50, MED'52), of Burnaby, BC, completed his final 2 years of Medicine at U of A in Edmonton. In summer of 1953 he worked at the Aberhart TB Sanatorium at a time when antibiotics and surgical treatment were developing for this condition. It was also the summer in which he was married to Marvie Jean Leys, who worked in medical technology. Medical graduation at U of A was in 1954, followed by a rotating internship at St. Paul’s Hospital back in Saskatoon. Wiebe then commenced a 7-year career chapter in rural General Practice in Saskatchewan, the first year in Milden, followed by 6 years in Wadena. Their 3 sons were born during this period. Firstborn Doug later attended U of T and practiced as a Family Physician for many years before transitioning to Occupational Medicine. Raymond raised his family in Whistler and has operated a successful house renovation business. Dale also works in building renovation and art projects. They, as a family, have enjoyed activities of music, gardening, hiking. In 1962, Wiebe began his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto. After completion he worked for 2 years in private practice in suburban Toronto. They then moved to BC in 1969. Wiebe established a solo practice in general ophthalmology in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey, where he was on staff at Surrey Memorial and St. Mary’s Hospitals. In 1993 he discontinued surgical practice and was joined by a surgical associate, as his vision had begun to decline. Wiebe's remaining years of practice consisted of medical ophthalmology until his retirement in 2006, at age 75. Over the decades of medical practice there were transformative technical surgical innovations, particularly with cataract microsurgery. Concurrently, many issues of medical ethics arose and continue to be significant challenges today. During his career in the late 1960s national Medicare was introduced. Though he had initial misgivings about this program, Wiebe now concludes that every developed nation should include Medicare for their citizens. His family had to contend with a tragedy, when his wife Marvie suffered a major cerebral hemorrhage, with permanent disability requiring total nursing care for many years. Their growing extended family was remarkably supportive over these 32 years until Marvie passed away at age 82. They learned many lessons in care giving and rehabilitation. It also focused their attention on the value of their faith community. Wiebe has greatly valued his family - his 3 sons, 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, and now at age 91 he is most grateful for a long and fulfilling life.

Wuschke retired in 1990 to accompany his wife who was chosen by AECL to work at International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) in Vienna Austria. He is now living a happy retirement in Pinawa, Manitoba and enjoying the fruits of a great education at the U of S. From the son of subsistence farm owners in southern Saskatchewan to successful career in engineering - a story of success in trying circumstances. Still an IT geek, willing to tell the "youngsters of today" what they were missing back in the day when computers were really HUGE and, by today's standards, pathetically underpowered. We did such great things with so little computational resources! Who writes programs on punched cards today? And, hey, what about paper tape? We had "hanging chads" before it was cool! Goodness knows, I got an entire summer job, just because a single hanging chad caused a mysterious and fatal bug. I had to pseudo-code the heck out of Xerox Sigma-2 assembly code to find it... Wouldn't have had a 4-year degree otherwise! Life is good! Had a great job in the Department of Computer Science, married my sweetheart, have 3 wonderful daughters and a grand-daughter... I still read Knuth's "The Art of Computer Programming" once in a while...Best to all! Hope your lives and careers have been as rewarding. Blessings, David Bocking.”
