2013 Report to Donors

Message From the President

By Kelsey Topola
In the past year I have travelled across the country to meet with many of you and hear your stories; each time I speak with a group of alumni and donors, I am asked "What can we do?" I am not surprised when I hear this question — U of S alumni and supporters are among the most committed I have ever met. Even though you have done so much already, you are always looking for more ways to get involved.

My answer is always to stay engaged with your university community. Visit your campus, connect with your fellow alumni and give back in ways that are meaningful to you. Whether it`s volunteering, mentoring a student or making your annual gift to support your college, remember that we are stronger because of you.

For example, in December members of the U of S community came together to support students during our first ever day of giving —Focus on our Future. In 24 hours, you provided hundreds of gifts raising more than $586,000! Your support energized our entire campus and provided immediate support to students, which is changing their lives. Moments like this demonstrate the true power of our community.

Thanks to your support we also opened the new Rayner Dairy Research and Teaching Facility in October. This facility, which now houses our entire herd of 100 dairy cows, not only supports our researchers with unique study opportunities, but also helps agriculture-bioresources and veterinary medicine students receive hands-on experience in their studies. I hope you visit the facility and its fascinating interpretive centre the next time you are on campus.

These are just two highlights you will read about in this impact report, which showcases just some of the ways your donations helped us grow during the past year. You will learn how donors, like you, affect all aspects of our university every single day — from the academic programs and resources available for students and the innovative scholarly work and research, to the exciting changes that are shaping our campus, our classes and our community for the better.

Thank you again for your remarkable support in 2013.
