Volunteering: it's in our DNA

University of Saskatchewan alumni are no strangers to volunteering. Quite the contrary, in fact.

Nicole Sarauer (JD'09) is the MLA for Regina Douglas Park and is just one example of an alumnus who gives back to her community by sharing her time and talent. Sarauer strongly believes that “a life of service to others is a life worth living.”

“I have had the opportunity, through volunteering, of getting to know some of the most inspiring and incredible people. They have been both mentors and friends to me,” said Sarauer.

Her passion for volunteering started during her time as a student. She became involved in the Regina Sexual Assault Centre—then a 24-hour sexual assault line.

“I learned about the structural barriers that many face in our society, as well as problems with accessing the justice system,” said Sarauer.

What keeps her motivated is twofold; she loves helping others but is also grateful for the personal fulfillment volunteering provides. She says she has learned that the most rewarding experiences in life come from helping others.

“I’ve learned about the barriers and injustice that exist in our own community, many of which people often overlook or are invisible to those who are more fortunate. I’ve learned that you can never tell what the person next to you is dealing with in their lives,” said Sarauer.

Today Sarauer is working at the Free Legal Clinic through Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan; a board member for Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers; a board member of Regina’s chapter of Amnesty International; and a volunteer and board member with the YWCA Big Sisters program.

Her advice for others looking to volunteer?

“My hope is that others learn about the issues of inequality in their own neighbourhoods and realize that anyone can make an impact.”

National Volunteer week is April 15-21. If you are interested in volunteering email alumni.volunteer@usask.ca and provide your name, contact information and your areas of interest.
