Former Huskies Coach Honoured

Former University of Saskatchewan Huskies track and field coach Lyle Sanderson (BAPE'63, MSc'69) recently won the Coaching Association of Canada's Geoff Gowan Award, recognizing his lifetime contribution to coaching development in Canada.

Sanderson shares this year's award with Edmonton field hockey coach Dru Marshall.

Sanderson coached at the U of S from 1970 through 2004, where he led the track and field and cross country teams to 11 CIS/CIAU National University Championships and 37 Conference Championships. He was named the University of Saskatchewan's Coach of the Year 10 times, CIS Coach of the Year five times, Canada West Track and Field Coach of the Year every year he was eligible but one, was a two-time winner of the Canadian Track and Field Association's Coach of the Year award, and he has been inducted into three halls of fame.

During his career, he was named to the Canadian coaching staff for 54 Athletics Canada National Teams, including three Olympic Games, two World Championships, two Pan American Games, the Commonwealth Games, and two World University (FISU) Games.

The award was presented in Ottawa on November 19.
