Tom Gauley Prize Established in Law Honours Prominent Saskatoon Lawyer

The prize has been created to mark prominent Saskatoon lawyer Tom Gauley’s 90th birthday this past October and celebrate the many contributions he has made to the legal community in the province.

Tom graduated from the University of Saskatchewan and went on to form the firm of Francis Woods & Gauley in 1945, and then McDougall Gauley LLP in 1981. During his extensive career, he has become one of Saskatchewan’s most notable and respected lawyers. Tom helped establish the first Bar Admission Course for the Law Society of Saskatchewan, and later became president for the society. He also served on the province’s “Committee on the Constitution”, which advised on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982. Most notably, he earned national honours when he has appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 2003. This past fall he also received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for “an outstanding commitment to the communities they call home and to the people in Saskatchewan.”

Tom has lectured at the University of Saskatchewan, and also served on its Board of Governors. He has also mentored over 50 articling students through his career, many of whom also graduated from his alma mater. This annual prize, established in his name, will be awarded each year to the first year law student with the highest blended average in Torts and Contracts. The first award will be made in the 2012/13 academic year.
