Former Saskatchewan Treaty Commissioner Bill McKnight dies at 79

Saskatchewan’s third Treaty Commissioner, Bill McKnight (LLD'14), has died at the age of 79.

McKnight, who was raised in the community of Wartime, an unincorporated community between Rosetown and Swift Current, was also the Member of Parliament for the Kindersley-Lloydminster riding from 1979 to 1993, serving as Federal Minister of Indian Affairs from 1986 to 1989. Most notably, he played an instrumental role in the creation of the 1992 Saskatchewan Treaty Land Entitlement Framework.

He retired from politics in 1993 and in 2007 became Saskatchewan’s Treaty Commissioner, a position he held until 2012.

McKnight passed away on Oct. 4 as reported by the Saskatoon StarPhoenix.
