USask writers honoured at Saskatchewan Book Awards

Writers associated with the University of Saskatchewan (USask) took top honours in five categories at the Saskatchewan Book Awards gala held April 27th in Regina:

  • Robert Calder, Professor Emeritus of English, won the City of Saskatoon and Public Library Book Award for A Hero for the Americas (University of Regina Press).  Calder, a Governor-General’s award-winning author, was a previous recipient of the Saskatoon Book Award in 2004, as well as winner of the Scholarly Writing Award in 2004.
  • History professor Valerie Korinek won the Jennifer Welsh Scholarly Writing Award for Prairie Fairies  (University of Toronto Press)
  • Jeanette Lynes, Coordinator of the Master’s of Fine Arts in Writing at USask, won the Muslims for Peace and Justice Fiction Award for her novel The Small Things That End the World (Coteau Books)
  • USask alumnus Randy Lundy (bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English) won the Saskatchewan Arts Board Poetry Award book Blackbird Song (University of Regina Press)
  • Alumnus Arthur Slade (bachelor’s degree in English) won the G. Murray and Edna Forbes Young Adult Literature Award for his book Crimson (HarperCollins). Slade was a previous recipient of the Young Adult Literature Award in 2010 as well as the Children’s Literature Award in 2001 and 2006.

The winner of the University of Saskatchewan Non-Fiction Award is former Saskatchewan Crown prosecutor Harold Johnson for Clifford (House of Anansi Press). Johnson’s 2016 book Firewater: How Alcohol Is Killing My People (and Yours) was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction.
