After joining the Remai Modern’s board of directors last year, Doug Matheson (BA'84, ARTS'85) has been elected as the group’s new chair, as reported by the Saskatoon StarPhoenix.

Matheson, a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, currently serves as branch manager vice-president at RBC Dominion Securities.

“I am honoured and delighted to have the opportunity to lead our committed board of directors and to work closely with Remai Modern’s senior leadership as we continue to grow the museum,” Matheson said Monday in a statement.

Matheson replaces Beau Atkins, who had served as interim board chair. Atkins said it has “been an honour” to serve as board chair, and that he “will remain closely connected to the museum. Having access to this world-class museum enriches our community and the lives of visitors.”

One of Matheson’s immediate tasks will be the selection of a new executive director this year. Lynn McMaster is temporarily filling the role following the controversial exit of Gregory Burke.

Burke announced his departure in December 2018 for a similar position at the Auckland Art Gallery in his native New Zealand. He later pulled out of that job due to publicity surrounding an allegation he said dates back to 2013 when he first started at the Mendel Art Gallery. A complaint against Burke was stayed on Dec. 31 by a Saskatoon judge.
