Community at the heart of Point Fitness Club

USask alumnus Godfrey Osakue (MPH'12) wants to give other alumni the gift of health this holiday season.

By Leslie-Ann Schlosser

Co-owner and founder of Point Fitness Club in Saskatoon’s Sutherland area has always had a love for health and fitness. In 2010, he pursued his passion and headed to the University of Saskatchewan (USask) to complete his Master’s in Public Health.

Originally from Nigeria, Osakue already had a kinesiology degree from York University and intended to return to Toronto after his time at USask. However, Saskatoon’s communal charm had other plans and Osakue found himself calling the City of Bridges his new home after he finished his degree in 2012.

After graduating, Osakue wanted to combine his love of health and helping people into a career. Opening a gym that could help people obtain their health, well-being and fitness goals seemed like the perfect next step.

“The best gift you can give yourself is health,” he said when asked why he went into business with himself.

From there, Point Fitness Club was born and has been in operation since 2017.

The state-of-the-art facility boasts innovative equipment, like treadmills that can access your Netflix account, impeccably clean work out areas, specialized personal trainers, and a family-like staff that makes members feel at home.

Point Fitness Club is the first partner to partner with Alumni Relation’s From Alumni For Alumni program. The exciting new program collaborates with USask alumni business owners to bring USask alumni savings and discounts.

Osakue’s overall mission is to empower members of the community to build healthy lifestyles and he believes reaching out to his fellow USask alumni is a great way to spread that message.

“This is my home now,” he said. “I identify this as my home now and that includes my alumni family.”

All USask alumni can sign up with Point Fitness Club on a month-to-month basis with no registration fee.

Membership features include:

  • No contract
  • 20 per cent discount on other services
  • One free 1-hour personal training session
  • 24-hour access

In keeping with his generous spirit, and as a sneak peek at the advice you can get as a Point Fitness Club member, Osakue had some free health tips for alumni this holiday season. When asked what alumni can do over the holidays to stay on track, Osakue stressed the importance of staying hydrated.

His top reasons for drinking water during the holidays:

  1. Drinking water regulates how much you eat. Drinking water before you eat can fill up your stomach, so you do not fill up on all the holiday goodies.
  2. Drinking water before consuming alcohol may lower the amount of alcohol you consume.
  3. Drinking water naturally increases metabolism.
  4. Drinking water with lemon or citrus helps oxidize the body and maintain balance.
